Yohann started playing in a ballroom orchestra and dancing socially in the early 90s in Normandy. Later, he took his first Argentinian Tango steps with teacher Yazmin Burel from Buenos Aires.
When moving to Leeds in 2000, he met Janeen as she was starting the first weekly Tango class at Leeds University with Frank Smith from Manchester. In September 2001, he started a class in York with Janeen and took over from Frank in Leeds in 2003. Yohann now teaches in Sheffield, Leeds & Harrogate and was, until recently, the resident Argentine Tango teacher at the Yorkshire Dance Centre.
As a leading exponent of Argentine Tango in Yorkshire and beyond, Yohann has performed at several prestigious venues including the West Yorkshire Playhouse, The Carriageworks Theatre, Leeds Town Hall, Leeds College of Music (The Venue), Wilton's Music Hall, London and at several more locations and events.
On his ongoing journey with Tango, Yohann has had the opportunity to attend classes and events with some of the most famous Tango maestros and artists in the world including Miguel-Angel Zotto & Soledad Rivero, Miriam Larici & Leonardo Barrionuevo, Geraldin Rojas & Ezequiel Paludi, Rachel Greenberg, Juan Carlos Copes, Natalia Gamez & Gabriel Angio, Veronica Gardella & Marcelo Bernadaz, Los Ocampo, Eduardo Cappussi & Marina Flores, Genoveva Fernandez & Andres Tanguito Cejas, Celia Blanco - Maria Nieves, Jose Libertella & the Sexteto Mayor, Guillermo Merlo.
Over the years, Yohann has developed his own teaching methodology in harmony with the essence of the dance, incorporating the best from his 10-year experience teaching and taking master classes. Besides making learning to dance fun, his classes focus on the importance of maintaining a strong communication within the dancing couple and aim at developing the leaders' ability to improvise and link steps together rather than learning sequences.
Yohann is a licentiate member of the United Kingdom Alliance of Professional Teachers of Dancing and Kindred Arts, specialising in Argentine Tango.
Janeen is the founder of Tango Yorkshire, formerly Tango Leeds, and comes to Tango via gymnastics, Salsa, Latin and Ballroom dancing. In 1999, she ran the first Tango workshop in Leeds with Federico Mazandarani. That same year, she organised the first weekly classes and Milonga at the Wardrobe in Leeds.
In 2000, with help from Frank Smith, she started a second weekly class in Leeds at Leeds University. Frank and Janeen taught the classes in Leeds as well bringing Tango to the Day of Dance. In 2001 Yohann and Janeen started Tango in York, later expanding the activities of TangoYorkshire to Bradford, Huddersfield, Harrogate and Sheffield. She has taught workshops in Nottingham, Liverpool, Lancashire, Cumbria.
Janeen organised tango weekends in Lancaster in 2002 and 2003. In 2004 she organised the first ever International Tango Festival in Leeds, with the Sexteto Mayor Orchestra and performances from Los Ocampo, Mina and Giraldo, Federico etc. The festival was a sold out success.
Janeen took part in the 2004 Grassington and 2005 Chapel Allerton Arts Festival as well as volunteering for the Leeds International Jewish Festival since 2007. In 2010, she together with Yohann worked on the 'Strictly Learning Dancing' for St Gemma's which raised £20,000 for the hospice. In 2012 she is planning a similar event for the Army Benevolent Fund.
